Canon 7D files - good or bad?

Postby Darwin on Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:01 am

Hey all, I have tested two Canon 7D's. The handling is a dream, love using the cameras.

I want to hear from actual owners of this camera regarding the file quality. Specifically are you happy with the files, do they compare well with whatever older model of camera you were using? Do you see any differences in file quality when shooting near subjects vs distance subjects. Any concerns at all out there? I am aware of the ghosting issue and the noise problems that some users have had but I am more concerned about file quality for general nature photography in sweet light at 100 ISO. Anyone? I would love to see files from anyone willing to share.

Hi Darwin,

I have had my 7D for one month now. I have not used it for low ISO landscapes, yet. I did post three "topics" with high ISO images of a Hummingbird on an overcast, rainy day. The results far exceeded my expectations, On my high ISO tests, here was only two variables - the ISO and the shutter speed. And no NR was applied. Here is one post (the other two are the same day:

I have heard of the ghosting. I have not heard or seen any noise issues. I have seen some "reviews" that had some flaws in how they were done. I don't know if they were "staged" to make the 7D look bad or not. I have seen some BIF AF reviews that were tack sharp and others that looked like "operator error". But AF is so dependent upon the photographer and what settings they used, I'll do my own tests.

I really enjoy your photographs of Alberta and the Canadian Rockies. And Outdoor Photography - Canada!

By the way, I'm comparing my 7D with my 5D2 and my 50D (that I just sold). I just had two bird photographs (from the 50D) selected in the NANPA 2010 Showcase top 250 out of 3,250 images.

I will be shooting some landscape images, as well as large mammals, very soon. I will post those results.

I have no issues with the 'noise' from the camera - expose 'right' and noise is amazingly well controlled. I am impressed by the low noise from thisa 18MP APS-c sensor.

I want to know if people are pleased by the 'quality' of the RAW files (tonality, smoothness, resolution etc).

Thanks for the link, Maxis. The whites look pretty good, with detail and no blotchy softness of the1DM2.
