A typical March day in Jasper

Postby John Labrenz on Tue Nov 03, 2009 3:35 am

More of a documentary image...but posted in response to a comment a month ago where someone lamented about the fact that they had seen no elk in their travels through Jasper National Park.

Although most photographers flock to Jasper to capture images of bulls during the Sept/Oct rut...the bulls and cows are still in the area at other times.

I dug through my archives to find this scene, typical for any day in March. The rut is long over....the bulls are gathered in small loose groups across the Athabasca river....the cows rest and graze on the plains awaiting spring newborns...the ravens are ever watchful.

I like this John. The elk provide visual interest and the mountainscape a great environmental aspect. This composition works well for the scene - the tree is well placed and the elk are evenly spaced apart. The crow at the top of the tree is an added bonus. There is nothing too dramatic here, but overall it is a pleasing image to view. Thanks for sharing.

A very nice image. Composed perfectly for the tree. I wish the elk along the left side wasn't clipped but otherwise a very attractive image.

Hi John,
Well composed with the tree placed well in the frame. A bit better light would put this up a notch.

This is a very pleasing image...lots to look at, with little details hidden within (i.e. the crows). No shortage of elk here!

Simple but effective. I like the bonus of the Elks I didn't expect from the thumbnail.

I agree with everyone else. Although it is not dramatic, it does have a lot of visual interest and is a very good documentary image. Nice work!

I think I know exactly where this is. A very nice Elkscape.

Thx for the comments everyone!
As I indicated...not a portfolio quality image...I merely wanted to show that the elk are there, out in the open...and not hiding!
